Are Electric Cigarettes Safe?
Posted on Feb 23, 2009 with Comments 2

Electric cigarettes are being advertised as a safer alternative to smoking real tobacco cigarettes. But just how safe are the e Cigarettes? Are there any health risks involved? Let’s review e smoking and make a comparison to “real” smoking so you can make a wise and intelligent decision if this may be a smoking alternative for you.
4,000+ toxic chemicals is the worst, most harmful aspect of smoking that is inhaled when you flare a tobacco cigarette. It’s in the actual smoke that causes lung cancer and respiratory disease, not the nicotine. With electronic cig smoking there is no smoke, only ‘vapor’ and none of these 4,000 toxic chemicals are produced… nothing is actually burning. No smoke means no tar, carbon monoxide, cancer carcinogens, etc.
But what you say about the nicotine? E cigarettes still produce nicotine. How dangerous is that? A need for more independent studies on the effects of nicotine by itself need to be done. Right now the health risks are still inconclusive. Nonetheless, it’s undeniable that a method of delivering nicotine that does not involve real smoke is going to be much safer than burning tobacco.
The FDA recently reported about finding in a sample of nicotine liquid, small traces of carcinogens in the e liquid. Yet these same carcinogens are also found in nicotine delivery alternatives like the patch and gum (which are both approved by the FDA). Every day foods, keep in mind, like peanut butter contain small trace levels of carcinogens too. This is not to say that we should not be concerned or blind about it. Just keep this in perspective. It’s important to remember that the dose of a particular carcinogen is an important factor in it’s toxicity. If electronic cig vapor have carcinogens present, it does not appear to be in high doses. Currently, there is no evidence that these carcinogens are even transposed into the actual electronic cig vapor that is inhaled.
Are electric cigarettes totally safe? We can only assume that they are not 100% safe until more studies are done it’s probably a good idea to lean on the side of caution. But if you analyze it to “real” smoking there really is no comparison. What we know for sure is that tobacco smoking is expensive, incredibly dangerous, cancerous and inconvenient. Electric cigarettes allow smokers an alternative smoke that emerge to be much safer and will probably save countless lives. I think it’s a no brainer given a choice between the two.

E-cigs are terrible! I smoked them for a month before I stopped them. I have smoked for ten years. When fire safe cigs (FSC) came into being I thought I was sick with Bronchitis. Turns out; they added chemicals (glue) and added extras (more paper)! No wonder why I felt ill. With the electric cigs I thought I was safer. Within a week I had serious trouble breathing. It satisfied my niccing for about 2 days. After that I was in a drawn out withdrawal. Then I realized the crap they put in them is the same they put in antifreeze. It is NOT WATER VAPOR. That is a lie! The chemicals are unknown; but I can tell u they are UNSAFE. The last time I had that much trouble breathing (emphyema-like), it was the switchover. I’m quitting my FSC’s next month & I cannot wait to be where I was before I stupidly lit one & fetishized it. Thanks mom. & thank you diazepam, for getting me thru the trying times!
Dear Jennay,
I hear you are saying you are dissatisfied with fire safe cigarettes.
FSC is entirely different from electric cigarettes. Those are still traditional cigarettes with slow burning papers, which is a type of asbestos to burn slower. If it’s slowing the burn, it’s toxic!
I don’t know what brand of e-cigarette you have tried but I can say that not all e-cigs are created equal. It may be the brand you tried was not satisfactory. That’s quite understandable.
A couple of first e-cigs the FDA found diethylene glycol, which is the component in anti-freeze as well as propylene glycol. But that’s how the FDA wants to scare you by claiming it’s in anti-freeze. PG is also in a lot of other products too. It’s mostly used to keep products from melting in the heat or freezing in the cold.
I can tell you why I promote GreenSmoke. Greensmoke’s ingredients are water, proplyene glycol,(they’ve added a vegetable glycerine), nicotine and flavor. That’s it. Allow me to explain more.
Proplyene glycol or PG is used in lotions, makeup, cake mixes, beer, soap, deodorants, baby wipes, I could go on and on. And guess what – PG is in Diazepam (as the solvent in the injectable form of the product) and other pharmaceutical medicines. It is also what produces stage smoke in theatrical events. Some people may be allergic to PG. PG in low amounts is approved by the FDA. Greensmoke has less than 1% of PG in a cartridge.
Vegetable Glycerine is a carbohydrate that is usually derived from plant oils. It is used as a sweetener and as an ingredient in a number of cosmetic products. Vegetable glycerin is also used in place of alcohol to extract botanicals.
Electric Cigarettes is not a magic pill, you still need to break your 10 year habit. E-cigarettes are close to the real thing and you still need your own determination to stay off tobacco. E-cigs can help make the switch from the toxins of FSC and Traditional Cigarettes. Once your off all those other toxins, then break the nicotine addiction and vape a zero nicotine e-cigarette then just stop.
So I hope you got these facts straightened out. I hope you would consider GreenSmoke a try. Nevertheless, never give up trying to quit.
Some say cold turkey is the best way but you and I know how nerve- racking that can be. Thanks for your opinion and best of luck to quitting for good!
